Vessels are required to be equipped with a means of determining direction and heading, readable from the steering position and independent of any power supply.
A correctly installed and adjusted magnetic compass, of a size and type suitable for the vessel, fulfills this requirement.
Don’t get lost at sea. Always know which direction you are going by having your magnetic compass in proper working order.
The magnetic compass was originally invented thousands of years ago in China and it is still the most reliable navigational instrument on your boat. It is unaffected by power cuts, solar flares or battery failure. A magnetic compass gets its power from the magnetic field of the earth. If that stops working we won’t be able to help you.
